Washington State hold Summit on Volunteering and Service
September 22, 2009 - Earlier this month leaders from the government, military, non-profit, education, and donor sectors met at the University of Washington to discuss strategies to mobilize volunteers in their communities. Sponsored by the Washington Commission for National and Community Service (WCNCS), this summit was the first of its kind to start discussion around how to utilize volunteers in an efficient and effective manner. The WCNCS oversees the AmeriCorps programs in Washington State.
The resounding theme of the day was around the investment that is required to build the framework for volunteers to operate in. This framework begins during project planning and continues through the project with adequate training and supervision support.
The keynote address was given by Governor Gregoire, followed by speakers from the Pentagon and the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS).
New AmeriCorps team launched!
September 21, 2009 - The newest cohort of AmeriCorps Members finished their two-week Pre Service Orientation last Friday and have embarked upon their 46-week term of service. Activities range from preschool to high school and academics to social services. As part of their community orientation this team has already painted two houses and landscaped Francis Street Park. This Friday they will be helping with the T Shirt Fish Prints at the Dungeness River KidsFest and next week they will be painting and cleaning the Camp David Jr grounds.
The energy and enthusiasm that has been evident in their first two weeks will be an amazing infusion into our community and we feel very fortunate to have such a great group of people. Please help us welcome this team of dedicated and passionate volunteers who have relocated to Clallam and Jefferson County to make a difference!
